Chatham University Health & Human Performance Center and Athletic Training Complex

Pittsburgh, PA

Chatham University has engaged Rios Williams Architects (RWA) to conduct a feasibility study and design a portion of the 2nd floor of their Eastside facility, evaluating the space’s suitability for accommodating new programs. RWA’s assessment determined that the 32,000-square-foot area is well suited to support the emerging men’s and women’s wrestling athletic programs, as well as the Athletic Training curriculum. The redesigned second floor will transform the existing space into a dynamic environment that meets the academic and athletic needs of students and staff.

The new Athletic Training Complex will feature amenities such as a fully outfitted weight room and fitness area, dedicated wrestling practice spaces, batting and pitching cages, a welcoming reception with a film room nearby, specialized wrestling locker rooms, university lockers with showers, an office suite for athletic training, and other supportive areas. The academic portion—known as the Health & Human Performance Center—will provide facilities for the new Athletic Training curriculum, including three athletic labs, a classroom, a modernized faculty/adjunct office suite, an open workspace for students, and a shared kitchenette.

RWA’s responsibilities encompassed full architectural design, interior finish selection, and coordination of all disciplines, and supported the project through full construction administration.
