University Event Venue and Residence

Pittsburgh, PA

The University House, constructed in the early 1900s in a colonial architectural style, functions as both the residence for the University President and as a venue for official University events. Rios Williams Architects (RWA) lead the comprehensive renovation of the entire property, addressing both exterior and interior components. Rehabilitation efforts required careful attention to design details and material selection while modernizing building systems and incorporating contemporary amenities.

Exterior upgrades included site enhancements, building improvements such as the addition of a dining pavilion and grilling terrace, installation of ADA-compliant ramps at front and rear entries, a redesigned governor’s drive, masonry re-pointing, exterior repainting, new entry doors, utility service improvements, and landscaping updates.

Interior renovations comprised restoration of all public and private spaces, modernization of entryways, living and event areas, kitchen, dining rooms, public restrooms, garage, and private residential quarters including bathrooms. The project also included ADA accessibility features. The scope further extended to the selection, procurement, and coordination of furniture, area rugs, lighting fixtures, appliances, decor and all day-to-day home/event accessories.

This initiative was executed as a turnkey interior project, encompassing all facets of design and FF&E procurement to ensure readiness for immediate occupancy.
